Peering into the unseen heart.

Artist Statement

I am interested in the unseen heart of human experience which marks a life. These moments often have an intensity which remains silent within a community and family; a reality that is not to be spoken. What does it mean to be a mutable human in a world that is quick to define, limit and discard? As an artist, I choose materials that are reflective of everyday life and the refuse it produces. My work uses techniques that range in simplicity to more iconic; like my use of precious metals within pieces. I layer materials and techniques while exposing the substrate to create a sense of movement – not only in the subject but the themes influencing the subject. I want my viewer to move through the image, themes, and time. My work seeks to explore violence, sexuality, death, the remembrances of generations.

Mixed Media Artworks

S J Singer chooses materials that are reflective of everyday life including the refuse it produces — children’s drawings, woven hair, empty containers… She is influenced by, and references reliquary in her work, incorporating the concept of sacrifice – the dialectics of the sacred and profane within in one. This debris is elevated with precious metals and techniques.  S J Singer is interested in the canvas as the physical body — the fabric representing the skin and the stretcher bars as the bones. These internal structures are exposed, much like an autopsy. It is an investigation.
